5 Things We Learned After Starting A Blog

Starting a blog was so exciting and uncomfortable at the same time. We were excited because it was something new but not sure how it was going to go.

We knew what we wanted to write about but had no idea how to get it in front of the right people.

In fact, we had no idea you can make money from blogging, and knowing what we know now we would be mad at ourselves if we never started our blog.

We started our blog in February 2020 and can't believe how much time has gone by.

It's something we decided to do in addition to our full-time jobs as a Cybersecurity Professional and a General Dentist.

Blogging is far from easy but it has changed our lives and perspective on helping others. First, a little backstory on how we got started.

You may have heard us say this before but we started our blog with the plan to only share our personal finance journey and help others learn more about money. In fact, we weren't 100% sure if we wanted to be so open about something so personal.

To point out, we weren't even sure if we would be wasting our time with starting a blog. But, blogging has allowed us to run a business together, increase our income, and help people learn about money.

Blogging has completely changed our lives for the better, and we encourage anybody who's interesting in learning to start a blog to do so.

Most importantly, all of this was able to happen because we decided to take chance and try to reach our goal when starting our blog. In fact, we've made so many mistakes with blogging, and we make mistakes every day. However, we continue to learn and network with others to make our blog better. That is to say, today we want to talk about the 5 things we love and learned from starting a blog. We learned a lot as we stated before but we want to highlight the things we love as well. If you haven't done so yet – please go follow us on Instagram. So, let's get into what we love and have learned about starting a blog.

Starting a blog reminded us that success takes time

When it comes to being successful with anything in life, there's not a quick solution you can just buy at the store. We had to remind ourselves that starting something new takes time to build it.

During our early days of starting a blog, we were frustrated because we weren't seeing the impact or results we hoped for. We felt like our message wasn't getting through to people the way we wanted it to.

But, that meant we had to take a step back and realize that nothing happens overnight. It's human nature to look at how successful somebody else has become and think you should be in that place also. However, that's not always the case.

In fact, we had to realize that we can't expect the same results as somebody who has been blogging for 10 years. It just doesn't work that way.

Those bloggers with experience could help us grow our blog and learn things we didn't know. In general, other bloggers shouldn't be viewed as competition. As the African Proverbs states, "if you want to go fast, go alone, If you want to go far, go together."

You can make great friends who are bloggers and influencers but you have to give to the relationship and not always have the takers mentality.

As a result, you will build great connections that will help lead you to build a money-making blog!

Don't force yourself to work

One thing we learned within the first few months of blogging is that we write best when we don't feel forced to work.

At the beginning, we would set deadlines and write but the content wouldn't flow as well as writing when we are in the mood to write. For example, we post our blogs on Monday and we would be still working on them Sunday night.

That is to say, now we always write ahead of time and sometimes even weeks before. The great thing about this approach is you never feel rushed, there's less stress, and you will create better content.

We like to plan ahead and be proactive to make sure we stay on track and feel motivated to write.

Be prepared to learn a lot when starting a blog

Starting a blog requires an open mindset in order to be successful. In other words, everything related to blogging is a learning process.

Most important to realize, blogging isn't a get rich quick scheme and it's difficult to stay dedicated. If you ever hear that blogging is easy, don't believe it.

Also, you won't start out making $50,000 your first month of starting a blog. There are so many things to learn and it comes from experience. It's no different than any industry, things are always changing in the blogging industry.

Ultimately, you will have to adjust and learn while the technology changes around you. For example, this includes understanding social media, email marketing, website design, creating content, running a website, and more.

We love doing things that aren't predictable because it keeps us interested. Our first learning moment was with email marketing. We first chose Mailchimp as our email platform but realized a few months later it wasn't the best platform for our needs.

To point out, we wish we had known this from the beginning, but it's part of the process. We set up our emails and build email lists in Mailchimp that had to be migrated.

Now, we tell all bloggers to start building their email list from the very beginning but choose a platform that can suit their needs for years to come.

We now use Converkit for our email marketing and it has been one of the best decisions we've made. Their software makes communicating with our email list a lot easier. Click here to check out Convertkit.

Starting a blog doesn't require any previous experience

The day we started our blog, we didn't have any experience. Most importantly, you don't have to be a technical person, understand social media, or be a great writer. You just have to be willing to put in the work and stay focused on the task of growing your blog.

In this case, you can learn as you go. Most bloggers were brand new at some point and had to learn what they were doing.

We are a perfect example because we only knew blogging existed but never actually did it. When we started Secret to Finance we definitely didn't know you can make money. All of this knowledge has come from our decision of starting a blog.

Blogging can replace your 9 to 5

To be honest, this is probably one of the best things about a side business and in particular blogging.

You can definitely make a living blogging! There are a lot of people who blog as their full-time job and make good money doing so.

Our goal was to create another stream of income to help us get out of debt and build generational wealth.

On the other hand, not every single person will become a successful blogger. And that goes for anything someone chooses to do.

Certainly, blogging can start off as a hobby and grow into a life-changing career.

Final words - 5 things we love and learned after starting a blog

In conclusion, starting a blog can be a life-changing decision. For us, it has opened our eyes to the wonderful possibilities that are out there. It requires us to stay focus on our dreams and goals and find a way to accomplish them.

We love these 5 things about blogging and we're sure we will find more in the future.
